News
OTM Cattle will be allowed into the food chain from
January 2006. This is good for exports, but will have a huge
impact on casualties. Casualties that will be accepted are
effectively broken legs below the hock or knee. Dirty animals
will not be eligible, which means that down cows may be rejected.
Animals born before 1996 will still be eligible for the OTM scheme.
New Food & Feed Hygiene
Regulations come into effect on 1 January 2006. These
regulations will affect hygiene on your farm - How will the new rules
affect you?

Pre-movement TB testing of cattle
from high-risk areas is in force. This particularly applies to
Scotland. Please ring us to check the situation before selling to
Scotland. Rules regarding testing are now much stricter. If
you are even one day beyond your 3 month testing window you will be
under restrictions.
Medicines legistlation
came into force at the end of the October forcing vets to provide
prescriptions free of charge. We are often asked why our drug
prices are higher than Internet pharmacies. Internet pharmacies
do not provide a 24 hour emergency service, the same level of advice,
or indeed the same full veterinary service. All these things are
subsidised by drug sales. If we lose significant sales from
medicines, our fees will rise to provide these services, time will tell.
Also from October 2006, it will be
illegal to posses medicines not authorised in the UK. How to you
know is authorised? If it is from a vet or a pharmacist on
prescription, it is OK. Any other sources are illegal.
Anyone who has a flock of more than
50 birds at a commercial premises must register it with DEFRA before 28
February. A fill list of details will be found at www.defra.gov.uk
