Heat
in Bitches
Most Bitches start around 6-7
months of age. They
usually become attractive to dogs from
the first day of heat but tend not to show
interest in dogs until 7-10 days have passed.
Conception may occur if a bitch is mated
at any time during her heat but is most
likely around 10-12 days signs are first
noticed.
Signs will usually disappear within 21
days. The majority of
bitches will continue to come "on heat" approximately
every 5-9 months throughout their lives.
The need for heat control in Bitches
There are many reasons for heat
control in bitches but the most important
are:
-
To prevent unwanted pregnancy
-
Health advantages - to reduce the risk of uterine problems, mammary tumours and false pregnancy,
-
Convenience - to avoid problems of messy bleeding, vulval swelling, attractiveness to dogs and the need to confine the bitch.
-
Consistency - during her heat of other stages of the cycle
Remember, in most bitches, heat lasts for three weeks and occurs twice a year.
Method of heat control
There are two methods of heat
control available:
-
Surgery - operation known as "spaying", to remove the
bitch's ovaries and uterus. The
bitch will not then come into heat
but also she will not be able to
have puppies.
-
Hormonal control - bitches can be given an artificial
hormone to prevent them coming into heat or shorten a heat that has
just begun.
How is the hormone given?
Tablet preparations are available but can usually only be given for short periods of time.
An injection specially delveloped for the control of heat in bitches is
usually started after the bitch has had her first season naturally.
Please see a veterinary surgeon for further advice on heat control to decide upon the best course of action for your bitch.
