Choosing the right pet insurance

What should I look for in a pet insurance policy?

There is no industry-wide standard for pet insurance.  The cover varies widely from one brand to another.  That's why it's important that you really understand what you are buying before you sign on the dotted line.

Here's a quick checklist of things to watch out for:

  1. Ensure that the policy will cover your pet's injuries or illness for as long as treatment is requiredSome companies will only cover your pet's treatment up to a certain financial limit, or for a certain period of time.

  2. Make sure you check the limits of cover Some schemes will offer less payment for treatment than others.  If you want more protection against expensive operations, then make sure you choose a policy that pays out more.

  3. Check that it provides the range of benefits you wantFor example:  Do you want the policy to pay for advertising and reward if your pet became lost? Check the full list of what's included - and excluded.

  4. Check what is covered under 'vet fees'.  Does the policy cover hereditary or congenital conditions? Will it pay out for clinical diet foods prescribed by your vet? What about behavioural problems?

Watch out for companies that offer deceptively low fees - with pet insurance, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Most importantly, be sure to ask all the questions you need when you shop around

So isn't it time you saved some money?
As veterinary procedures become more and more sophisticated, many animal conditions once considered untreatable can now be cured completely.  However, such procedures come at a cost.  Pet insurance means you don't have to worry about treatments for your pet, whether they be major life-saving operations - which can run into thousands of pounds - or smaller treatments for niggling injuries, illnesses or clinical diets to maintain your pet's quality of life.

Pets can be very expensive members of the family.  Insurance provides a safety cushion against the cost of those unexpected vet bills.

Not all policies are the same
Be careful when choosing an insurance policy - make sure you know what you are buying.
