Kentdale Orthopaedics

Referrals and second opinions

Although most cases can be dealt with within the practice by our vets and nurses, there are times when we may wish a colleague often in a separate practice to be involved. The difference between a second opinion and a referral is vague but essential a second opinion is where we would like a colleague to examine a case where we are uncertain of the diagnosis. A referral is usually where we know what the problem is, but lack the facilities or experience to treat it.

As a client you may of course come to us seeking a second opinion because you are not happy with the initial vet’s diagnosis. If this is the case, it is vital that we have the previous veterinary records.

This practice does have vets with special interests, and offers clients the opportunity to consult with the following people:

  •  Gerard Winnard - cardiac and respiratory medicine (holds RCVS Certificate in  Small Animal Cardiology)

  •  Paul Hibbin - orthopaedics (holds RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics)

  •  Richard Knight - homoeopathy and cattle health (holds RCVS Certificate in cattle Health and is a member of Faculty of Homoeopathy)

  • Simon Roch BVM&S Cert SAS MRCVS - Orthopaedic surgeon. Simon works from the kendal practice as Kentdale Orthopaedics (link at top of page.)

  •

 And visiting:

  •  Fiona Johnstone - physiotherapy

  • Karen Mather - physiotherapy (MCSP ACPAT Cat A) Cumbria Equine & Canine Physiotherapy. Contact: 01524782397

  • Alex J Smithson - Veterinary Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Referrals

Bob Collinson      Orthopaedics, based in Manchester
Gary Lewin          Ophthalmology, based in Penrith

Referrals from other practices

On occasion veterinary surgeons from other practices will ask us to examine and treat animals. The initial contact must be made by a veterinary surgeon, after which you the client will phone us to make the appointment. It is essential that the you are made aware that you will be seen by one of the vets with special interests listed above and after diagnosis and any treatment, the case will be referred back to your own practice. This practice never seeks to take over the referred case.
