DIET SHEET FOR VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA

The following simple regime is usually effective in clearing up most cases of intestinal upset in cats and dogs. It should be remembered that particularly in dogs, vomiting is frequent, often unrelated to illness and in the wild is the means by which a mother will feed weaned pups.

FRESH WATER MUST BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES

If your water has a lot of chlorine in it try using cooled boiled water from the kettle

MILK SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN AT ALL

DAY 1

24 hours starvation

DAY 2

Four to five small meals consisting of plain boiled rice or scrambled egg made without butter, milk or seasoning

DAY 3

Four to five small meals of the above plus boiled chicken or white fish

DAY 4

You can now start to add small quantities of your pet’s normal diet to the food gradually increasing the volume fed until your pet is back to normal feeding habits.

Pedigree/Whiskas Recovery Diets

As an alternative to cooking and preparing the food yourself, we can recommend the use of a special recovery diet available at the surgery.

If you are at all concerned about your pet’s health or the vomiting or diarrhoea persists beyond two days please ring the surgery and speak to a Vet or a Nurse.

Dietary Advice

If you have any concerns about your pet’s diet or would like some information on the wide range of foods now available, please ask one of the Nurses for details.
