VETS ON FARMS

MORE THAN JUST THE SICK  ANIMAL

THE VET’S ROLE ON FARMS IS CHANGING, FOR AS WELL AS ATTENDING TO SICK OR INJURED LIVESTOCK WE PROVIDE A FULL ARRAY OF SERVICES TAILORED TO IMPROVING ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE.

THESE SERVICES INCLUDE:

Mastitis Control
For the individual cow we can culture milk samples in our laboratory to determine the best treatment for that cow. Additionally, we can utilise monthly cell counts to determine the nature of any potential problems. Advice can also be given on the most judicious use of dry cow treatments.

Nutritional advice
With the demands on high yielding cattle, getting the feeding right is key to avoiding many problems at all stages of production. With the aid of a specific computer programme we can formulate rations for beef and dairy cattle as appropriate.

Lameness
Lameness in cattle and sheep is an increasing problem that involves both bacterial infections and environmental effects. Treatment has to be aimed at the flock or herd, with additional therapy or foot surgery for the affected individual.

Worming Programmes
We regularly perform faecal egg counts to determine the level of infection and to assess the effectiveness of therapy. We can also use these counts to control worms by pasture management and a more targeted use of worming medicines. Please bring in a fresh sample in a suitable container not gloves and we will be able to tell you the approximate number and type of worms, then tie in the best available product. This reduces the amount of wormers used and helps avoid the growing problem of resistance. All wormers available on next day delivery for  cash sale prices.

Herd Health Planning

Optimising health and production using treatment plans and disease monitoring. As herds and flocks grow larger and purchasers become more demanding, written health plans become more important. All our health plans are NADFAS or BCVA compatible.
The herd companion website can be found at www.nmr.co.uk To view your herd records you need to register your details with Customer Services, by calling 08457 660236 or ask our vets about access to your Herd Companion data.
